7. Shakuntala: The Journey of Sarvadamana

Updated: Oct 9

The Early Years of a Remarkable Boy

The most pious and revered of men, Kanva, meticulously carried out all the elaborate rites and ceremonies outlined in the sacred scriptures for the young boy. This boy exhibited remarkable intelligence and potential. With each passing day, he steadily matured and evolved into a being of great promise. He was endowed with a strikingly bright smile, framed by sharp and strong pearly white teeth that gleamed with health.

His physical strength was remarkable. He possessed the power to take down even the mightiest of lions, a testament to his extraordinary resilience and agility. On his palms, he bore all the auspicious signs—intricate patterns that marked him for greatness and hinted at a promising future. His forehead was broad and smooth, projecting an air of wisdom beyond his years. With his captivating beauty and immense strength, he seemed to embody the very essence of vitality and virtue.

A Celestial Child

As the days passed, the boy's growth resembled that of a celestial child, almost as if he was touched by the divine. By the time he reached the age of six, his strength had reached astonishing heights. He demonstrated his prowess by seizing and binding tigers, boars, buffaloes, and even elephants to the sturdy trees that stood majestically around the hermitage. This display of power not only awed the watchers but also solidified his reputation as an extraordinary being, destined for greatness in the eyes of all who witnessed his feats.

Mastery Over Nature

He rode on some of these wild beasts, showcasing not only his remarkable skill but also his deep connection with nature. These creatures, known for their untamed spirits and fierce independence, were no easy companions. Yet, he managed to seize some of them, showcasing his unparalleled bravery and determination. His pursuits were not always serious; at times, he engaged with them in a playful mood, displaying a lighter side that endeared him to both the animals and the onlookers.

The laughter and joy that filled the air during these moments revealed his ability to bond with even the wildest of creatures. The dwellers of the hermitage of Kanva, witnessing these extraordinary feats, were profoundly impressed. They observed how he interacted with the beasts, mastering their movements and earning their trust.

The Birth of a Legend

In recognition of his achievements and his ability to conquer the wild, they decided to bestow upon him a name that would reflect his prowess and spirit. Thus, they called him Sarvadamana, a name signifying one who has subdued all. This name was not just a name; it embodied his essence.

Note: So, in ancient India, the naming doesn't happen until after the baby grows up. They name a child after observing its traits.

Sarvadamana was endowed with great strength, energy, and power—qualities that set him apart from others. His physical might was complemented by his mental fortitude, allowing him to face challenges head-on. As he continued to explore the wilderness and engage with its inhabitants, the name Sarvadamana became synonymous with courage and mastery over the natural world.
