11. Shakuntala: Individuality and Autonomy

ree

Examining the Character Kanva

Kanva doesn't consult Shakuntala and ask for her opinion, even for the sake of recognizing her as a fellow human being. That idea didn't even cross his mind, even for a second. The sage and guardian of Shakuntala demonstrates a troubling lack of awareness and consideration for her feelings and opinions. His actions reveal not only personal failure but also a systemic problem rooted in tradition, where women's autonomy is often ignored in favor of patriarchal norms. Kanva’s silence regarding Shakuntala’s agency symbolizes a common pattern in ancient stories to silence women’s voices, reinforcing a legacy that still influences cultural attitudes today. The effects of such behavior go beyond the immediate story, showing how the lack of consultation and respect for women's choices has been woven into societal expectations, often at the cost of progress.

A Question of Respect

Despite being in a position of authority and responsibility over her, he fails to engage with her as an equal, overlooking the fundamental aspect of mutual respect that should exist in any relationship, especially one as significant as that between a mentor and their ward.

Societal Norms and Missed Opportunities

This oversight is particularly striking when one considers the societal norms of their time, which often placed women in subordinate roles. Yet, even within such a framework, the expectation would be for Kanva to at least acknowledge Shakuntala’s perspective as a fellow human being. The very thought of consulting her about important matters that affect her life and future does not even seem to register in his mind, revealing a profound disconnect between his role as a sage and his responsibilities toward her as a person.

Broader Cultural Implications

The absence of this consideration speaks volumes about the broader cultural attitudes towards women in Hindu society. It raises critical questions about the nature of authority and the ethical implications of exercising power without regard for the autonomy and voice of those who are affected by one’s decisions. Kanva’s failure to recognize Shakuntala’s humanity not only diminishes her individuality but also perpetuates a cycle of silence and subjugation.

A Lasting Impact

Eventually, it had a lasting impact on Hindu society for ages to come. Hindu culture and society in general, till this day, especially in backward and rural areas, have failed to reflect on this social issue. No society can become wiser or progress until it dares to question these practices and shift its attitudes.

Why do Indian men cling to this kind of culture that oppresses and subdues women?

Answer: Why wouldn't they?

After all, when centuries of tradition have shaped a society where men are rarely challenged for perpetuating systems that benefit them, why would they willingly relinquish such privilege? The normalization of ignoring women's voices, as seen in Kanva's treatment of Shakuntala, offers men a comfortable position of authority, unburdened by the need to question inherited customs or confront the discomfort of self-examination. This cycle is reinforced by social structures that reward conformity and discourage dissent, so the status quo persists, allowing men to maintain control without accountability. Until there is a collective willingness to recognize and confront these ingrained patterns, the culture of suppression will remain unchallenged, robbing society of the wisdom and progress that comes from true equality.
